h, The Last Ship... A summer time-waster if there ever was one -- and I mean that in a good way. When the latest round of HBO shows were all but in the books and network fall shows were still weeks away, TNT's The Last Ship was there to fill the void. Luckily, the Michael Bay-produced drama series also happened to be pretty entertaining, with no shortage of explosions or gun fights to keep things interesting. Heck, by the end of Season 1, even a few of the characters had come into their own, offering several great seasonal arcs.
Of course, the real draw of The Last Ship was its unique, double-edged premise: U.S. Navy meets global pandemic. Therein lied the makings of some quality popcorn TV, and for the most part the series delivered. The pilot took immediate hold of viewers with its top-notch production values, expeditious storytelling and unique investigation into a very believable viral outbreak.
At the onset, characterization was somewhat weak, and that would continue for several more episodes, as the story focused more on action and less on the crew. "Welcome to Gitmo" and "We'll Get There," for example, were almost entirely action-based, with the crew embarking on away missions and going toe-to-toe with a Russian vessel (respectively). In fact, it wasn't until Season 1's fourth episode "We'll Get There" that we began to get a real sense of who these characters were and how they had been affected by the outbreak. Granted, in terms of main storylines, "We'll Get There" was also probably the weakest episode of the bunch. (Ship maintenance, anyone?)

All of that helped The Flash race right out of the gate, hit the ground running, and other assorted speed-related puns in its premiere episode. For whatever fears I may have had about Gustin's physicality or leading man potential in his early Arrow appearances, he rapidly grew into the role of Barry Allen once the spotlight was placed on him. Gustin brought a winning blend of youthful energy, latent pathos and Peter Parker-esque awkwardness to the table. He gave us a Barry Allen that's impossible not to connect with. Barry is immensely likable. He's less intense than Stephen Amell's Oliver Queen. He's driven by tragedy but anchored by a small family unit. He's faithful to the comic book Barry Allen but tempered by a bit of Wally West's humor and everyman appeal.
