Last year, TNT did what few have been able to do over the years: bring the veracity of a Michael Bay action film to television – with the help of Michael Bay himself – in the form of the post-apocalyptic adventure series, The Last Ship. However, despite its rather impressive pilot (that was aided by having Bay film some of the episode’s major action scenes himself as a second unit director) and overall exciting first season, last year’s finale left much to be desired. The cliffhanger felt rather tame and didn’t leave audiences all that excited for what was to come (not so much because of the content, but rather because of its execution). Something about the way Chandler delivered his call to the Nathan James just didn’t feel as “cinematic” – for lack of a better word – as the rest of the series had up to that point. However, with season two, the show seems to be looking to correct that mistake in a big way.

Picking up immediately where last season left-off, we rejoin the crew of the USS Nathan James as they work to re-take control of their ship from Amy Granderson’s rogue force. At the same time, Chandler aligns himself with some new allies to help him take down Granderson’s operation meant to only save a select few from the virus in the re-constructed city of Baltimore. However, with Chandler out of contact with the crew, the two plans are easier said than done.

In many ways, The Last Ship is choosing to adopt a Netflix/Amazon approach to its season premiere that thrusts the audience into the action without offering any sense of reminder as to whom everyone is, what their relationship is to one another and why they are where they are. For much of the first hour, new fans are going to find themselves disoriented by the non-stop sequences of a ship under siege and covert attempts to shut down a rogue conspiracy. However, much of this begins to take shape by the time hour two of the premiere rolls around.Starting in the second half the two-hour episode, everyone’s role in the show’s post-apocalyptic game becomes clear, and thanks to that, much of the action is able to pick-up some much needed weight. By the time the Nathan James crew enacts its plans, the audience is right there with them in what amounts to a rather excellent sequence that alludes to the only decent part of Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor – you know the one. However, what the premiere doesn’t do is bother trying to cram a variety of nonsensical world expansions into its premiere.
